Long Exposure High Key Photography at Ayrmer Cove

I ventured to Ayrmer Cove in South Devon with my Nikon Z6 camera, braving relentless rain to capture long-exposure photographs. Equipped with wet weather gear, I adapted my plans due to the conditions, opting for a high-key photography theme with my 24-70mm lens and K&F ND filters. Despite the challenges, I enjoyed the experience and captured unique, ethereal images of the cove. The day reinforced the importance of adaptability and perseverance in photography, proving that braving the elements can lead to rewarding results.

In the face of adverse weather conditions, I decided to venture out to Ayrmer Cove, a picturesque rocky beach in South Devon, renowned for its stunning rock formations. Ayrmer Cove is fortunately just a half-hour drive from my home. Known for its rugged beauty, the beach has become a popular spot for photographers, often photographed with a moody atmosphere. However, I aimed to bring a different perspective to my photographs this time.
Upon arrival, I hesitated momentarily, contemplating whether to brave the elements or retreat to the warmth of my car. Summoning my courage, I embarked on the half-mile walk to the beach, fully prepared for the wet conditions. The sea greeted me with a mesmerising colour, enhanced by a slight mist from the persistent rain. The sky, though drab and flat, provided a unique backdrop for my intended high-key photography theme.
Initially, I had planned to use my 70-200mm lens. However, this required brass step-up rings to accommodate my 10-stop filters, which made it challenging to protect the front of the lens from the elements. Instead, I opted for my 24-70mm lens, which allowed me to use my magnetic K&F ND filters along with a lens hood. This setup ensured that the lens and filters were well-protected from the rain, a crucial factor in such weather conditions.
As I set up my equipment, I noticed another photographer on the beach, skilfully shooting under an umbrella. I couldn’t help but think that an umbrella might have been a useful addition to my own gear, despite being an additional burden to carry. Nevertheless, I was determined to make the most of the day and capture some stunning images.
I began by exposing my shots correctly in-camera, intending to process them later for a high-key effect. The rain, though persistent, added a unique character to the scene, creating a misty, ethereal atmosphere that complemented my photographic vision. The challenge of managing my equipment in such conditions only added to the satisfaction of the creative process.
