Photography website SEO

I have already seen a modest increase in visitors finding my website on Google Search since posting more photography blog articles.

Understanding Search Impressions and Clicks

While I take pride in the aesthetics of my website, I’ve come to a harsh realization: it’s not performing as well as I’d hoped. Despite investing considerable time and effort into creating captivating content and stunning photographs, my site remains virtually unnoticed. What’s the point of having a website if no one ever visits it? This frustration is compounded by the fact that SEO is part of my day job, yet I’ve neglected to apply it to my site. But I’m determined to change that—without spending a dime.

My objective is clear: I aim to achieve 200 search impressions and 7 clicks per day on Google. For those unfamiliar, search impressions refer to the number of times a user sees my website’s link in the search results. Clicks, on the other hand, represent the instances when a user clicks on my website’s link after seeing it in the search results. It’s not an overly ambitious goal, but it’s certainly attainable. When I began this journey in November, my site was only garnering a dismal 20 search impressions daily. It was disheartening to think that my carefully curated images were going unseen.

Google places significant importance on two factors for higher search rankings: quality content and quality backlinks. Quality backlinks are essentially endorsements from other websites, suggesting that my content is authoritative and relevant. They are considered a vote of confidence from other online entities, contributing significantly to my website’s credibility and search engine rankings. Since backlinks are somewhat beyond my immediate control, I’ve chosen to focus on enhancing the quality of my content. This involves ensuring swift loading times, optimizing photographs, and ensuring mobile compatibility. Already, I’ve witnessed a notable uptick in search impressions—now averaging between 50-60 per day—after publishing about ten new photography-related posts. To maintain consistency and relevance, I’ve set a minimum word count of 500 for each post.

In addition to content improvements, I conducted a rudimentary SEO audit using the free version of Screaming Frog. This allowed me to rectify broken links and ensure the correct SEO tags were in place—a simple yet effective measure to boost visibility.

Ultimately, my overarching goal is to attract enough traffic to my website to monetize my photography by selling prints. Stay tuned for an update on my progress in December 2024.

Expanding upon the challenges faced, it’s essential to recognize the competitive landscape of online content. With millions of websites vying for attention, standing out requires strategic planning and execution. While the initial disappointment of low traffic can be disheartening, it serves as a catalyst for improvement.

Delving deeper into the significance of quality content, it’s not merely about crafting visually appealing posts but also about providing value to the audience. Each piece of content should resonate with the target demographic, offering insights, inspiration, or solutions to their needs. By consistently delivering high-quality content, trust and credibility are established, laying the groundwork for organic growth.

Moreover, addressing technical aspects such as page loading speed and mobile compatibility is paramount in today’s digital landscape. With users increasingly accessing websites via mobile devices, a seamless browsing experience across all platforms is non-negotiable. Optimizing these technical elements not only enhances user experience but also signals to search engines that the site is trustworthy and user-friendly, thus positively impacting search rankings.

The utilization of free SEO tools, such as Screaming Frog, showcases the resourcefulness and adaptability required in the digital realm. While investing in premium tools may offer additional features, leveraging free resources can still yield significant improvements in website performance. Conducting regular audits and addressing any issues promptly ensures that the site remains optimized for search engine visibility.

Looking ahead, the prospect of monetising photography through print sales underscores the transformative power of effective SEO strategies. By attracting a steady stream of traffic and nurturing a loyal audience, the website evolves from a mere showcase of creative work to a lucrative business venture. With dedication, perseverance, and a strategic approach, the journey towards achieving SEO goals becomes not only feasible but also immensely rewarding. As the journey continues, each milestone reached serves as a testament to the power of persistence and adaptation in the ever-evolving digital landscape.

I plan to revisit my SEO strategy for my photography web site again in six months time possibly by doing some keyword research and create blog articles accordingly.
