Exploring European Cities Through Live Music: Our Journey with New Model Army

Inspired by a televised gig, my partner and I began a journey to explore European cities through live music. This year, we chose Vienna to witness ‘New Model Army‘ in action, a band with a devoted following despite their smaller size. Their eclectic sound and poignant lyrics captivated us. The gig at SUK near the city centre was unforgettable, and I discreetly captured moments through my camera lens. Already planning our next trip to Bilbao, Spain, to see New Model Army again, I’m eager to share more memories and photographs from our musical adventures.

Several years ago, I found myself entranced by a televised gig featuring Moby performing in a large square somewhere in Europe. In that moment, a spark ignited within me and my partner; we decided to embark on a unique adventure. We made a pact to use live music as a gateway to explore European cities we might not have otherwise considered visiting. Thus began our journey of musical exploration, with past destinations including Cologne, Dublin, Valencia, and Amsterdam.

This year, our chosen destination was Vienna, where we eagerly anticipated watching one of my all-time favourite bands, ‘New Model Army.’ Despite having a smaller following than they rightfully deserve, New Model Army boasts an incredibly loyal and enthusiastic fan base (who have even been photographed by the legendary photographer Martin Parr). Their music resonates deeply with me, and witnessing their performance live was an experience I had been eagerly awaiting.

New Model Army, an English rock band formed in Bradford, West Yorkshire, in 1980, has undergone numerous line-up changes over its four-decade history. Lead vocalist, guitarist, and principal songwriter Justin Sullivan remains the sole constant member of the band. Drawing inspiration from a diverse range of musical genres including punk, folk, soul, metal, and classical, the band’s sound is as eclectic as it is captivating. Sullivan’s poignant lyrics, spanning themes from political commentary to personal introspection, have long been revered by fans as a defining feature of the band’s identity.

The venue for the gig in Vienna was the SUK, conveniently located near the city centre. I seized the opportunity to capture the essence of the performance through my camera lens, discreetly snapping a few photographs from the back of the venue to ensure I didn’t obstruct the view of fellow concertgoers. The energy within the venue was palpable, as fans revelled in the music and camaraderie of the moment.

As the final chords faded into the night, I found myself already planning our next musical pilgrimage. Our sights are set on Bilbao, Spain, where New Model Army will once again grace the stage with their electrifying presence. The anticipation of embarking on another journey of musical discovery fills me with excitement and anticipation.

Stay tuned for future posts, where I’ll share more photographs and memories from our unforgettable trip to Vienna. Until then, let the music guide you on your own adventures, and never underestimate the transformative power of live music in unlocking the hidden gems of the world’s great cities.
